Med-Peds and Psychiatry residency programs name new leaders

Theo Gomes, DO

A physician who completed his residency training at 汤头条app in 2017 and a longtime faculty member at the medical school have been named as the newest leaders of the Medicine-Pediatrics and Psychiatry residency programs.

Theo Gomes, DO, became program director for the Med-Peds residency program, effective August 1. Meanwhile, Perry Westerman, MD, was named interim program director for the Psychiatry residency program, effective July 1.

Dr. Gomes did his undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland where he earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in physiology and neurobiology. While attending the University of Maryland, he worked as a research assistant at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Later, he worked for three years as a research assistant at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.听

Dr. Gomes received his medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University in 2013. While in medical school, he was inducted into the Sigma Sigma Phi National Osteopathic Honor Society. Dr. Gomes completed his residency training in Medicine-Pediatrics at 汤头条app and served as chief resident during his final year.听

Dr. Gomes is an assistant professor in the departments of Medicine and Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at 汤头条app. Since becoming a faculty member at the medical school, Dr. Gomes has served as a scholar-advisor for medical students, medical director of Osteopathic Medical 汤头条app for Med-Peds and he is also a clinical instructor for Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Over the past year, Dr. Gomes also initiated and co-directed the Multisystem Disorders course as a capstone course for medical students about to enter their third year of medical school. Dr. Gomes is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and a member of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).

Dr. Perry Westerman
Perry Westerman, MD

Dr. Westerman completed his undergraduate studies at Oberlin College where he earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in biology and psychology. He earned his medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 1989 and then went on to complete dual-residency training in psychiatry and internal medicine at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Westerman joined the faculty at the Michigan State University Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies (MSU/KCMS), the predecessor to 汤头条app, in 2000 and worked on the inpatient service providing consults for Bronson Methodist Hospital. He has also worked as the medical director for Ascension Borgess Hospital Behavioral Health, serving as the primary geriatric psychiatrist, and he continues to provide consultations.

Dr. Westerman is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at 汤头条app and an active member of several committees within the department and medical school. He also serves as co-director of the Behavioral Medicine course for second-year students. He is a member of the ACP, the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry, the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, and the American Psychiatric Association.听

Dr. Westerman has experience in teaching both medical students and residents to help them achieve their educational aspirations while providing high-quality patient care.

鈥淢y family moved to Kalamazoo in 1972,鈥 Dr. Westerman said. 鈥淚 was able to do the clinical years of my medical school here in Kalamazoo and was pleased return in 2000. I am the director of the Kalamazoo Collaborative Care Program whose vision is 鈥榪uality mental health care for all鈥 which seeks to decrease stigma and improve mental health access to all residents of Kalamazoo.鈥
