Biosketch

Dr. Biren A. Shah is the assistant dean for career development and professor of radiology at ÌÀÍ·Ìõapp (ÌÀÍ·Ìõapp). Dr. Shah is the host of the ÌÀÍ·Ìõapp Specialty Spotlight podcast – a monthly podcast that explores the various specialties in medicine by interviewing physicians in each of the specialties/subspecialties. In the clinical setting, he serves as the section chief of breast imaging at Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Sinai-Grace and Huron Valley-Sinai Hospitals. He recently was appointed the ÌÀÍ·Ìõapp Chair of Radiology that will be effective May 1, 2024.


Dr. Shah completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 1992. After completing his medical degree at Tel Aviv University Sackler School of Medicine/N.Y. State American Program, Dr. Shah completed his diagnostic radiology residency at William Beaumont Hospital (now called Corewell Health University William Beaumont University) in 2001. After working as a general radiologist in private practice for 6 years, he decided to complete a breast imaging fellowship from Henry Ford Health System in 2008 to pursue a career in academic radiology. 

Dr. Shah is and has been heavily involved with many professional medical organizations since the beginning of his career. Dr. Shah has served and held leadership roles at numerous local, state, and national professional organizations. He was the past president of the Michigan Radiological Society, Saginaw Valley Radiological Society, Young Physician Section of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS), and Resident and Fellow Section of MSMS. Dr. Shah serves as a consultant on the Radiological Devices Panel of Medical Devices Advisory Committee for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration - an appointment he has held since 2010. In the past Dr. Shah has served as the associate program director of the DMC/ Wayne State University (WSU) diagnostic radiology residency program and as the fellowship director of breast imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University Health.

Dr. Shah has been academically active. His CV lists over 20 publications and over 20 abstracts reflecting presentations at local and national meetings. He has completed 2 research grants and has co-authored 2 breast imaging textbooks. Dr. Shah is the founder and series editor of A Core Review Series, a 10-volume radiology core exam series.

Among his many honors and awards, Dr. Shah is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and Fellow of the Society of Breast Imaging. He has been an award recipient of the Teacher of the Year from the diagnostic radiology residency program of DMC/WSU.
